NYC homes lingering on real estate market; here’s where sales are hot in the state

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — According to June data collected by Realtor.com, NYC homes on the marketplace appear to be lingering in comparison to other areas of the state.

In the five boroughs, residences on average sit on the market for extended periods of time. For example, when looking at the median days on the market, Richmond county, which encompasses Staten Island, sold the quickest of the boroughs with a median of 53 days.

Median days on market in NYC:

  • Richmond – 53 days
  • Kings – 64 days
  • Queens – 68 days
  • New York – 68 days
  • Bronx – 74 days

However, while sales in the city seem sluggish, other areas in the state are capable of selling homes within a couple weeks. What do most of these counties have in common? They are primarily located within western New York state.

Here are the top counties where sales are hot in New York, according to Realtor.com:

10. Putnam and Ontario counties – 33 days

Putnam county rests just under two hours from New York City and is home to destinations such as Putnam Valley and Brewster Hill. Meanwhile, Ontario lays farther to the west and encapsulates areas such as Canandaigua and Geneva. As indicated by the 2020 United States Census, the populations are 97,668 and 112,458 respectively.

9. Rockland County – 32 days

Located just north of the city, harboring towns such as Stony Point and New City, this county sits along the west side of the Hudson river. According to the 2020 United States Census, the county is home to 338,329 residents; it serves as a gateway to much of upstate New York. When compared to the same time a year prior, the median days on the market had a 0.219% change according to Realtor.com.

8. Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Tioga, Erie, and Yates counties – 31 days

Predominantly scattered about parts of Western New York, these five counties contain cities such as Buffalo, and Auburn. The largest population can be found in Erie county which is home to Buffalo, formerly known as Queen City. Resting along the shore of Lake Erie, the county is home to 954,236 individuals, as noted by the 2020 United States Census.

7. Wyoming County – 28 Days

Tucked between Geneseo and Buffalo is Wyoming county. Hosting small towns such as Bennington, Warsaw, and Silver Springs, the population totals up to 40,531 according to the 2020 United States Census. In addition quaint villages, the county notably boasts the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Letchworth State Park.

6. Tompkins and Schuyler counties – 26 days

Named after Daniel D. Tompkins, former New York Governor and Vice President of the nation, Tompkins county is mostly known for it’s land and colleges. Among the renown universities that call the county home are Cornell and Ithaca college. The 2020 United States Census reveals that Tompkins county hosts 105,740 residents.

Schuyler county, just to the left of Tompkins, is the second-least populous county in New York, with only 17,898 residents, as recorded by the 2020 United States Census. Here you will find the village of Watkins Glen and the Finger Lakes National Forest.

5. Orleans County – 25 days

Nestled between Niagara Falls and Rochester, this county is home to rural lands in close proximity to urban cities. Host to an array of small towns, Orleans is bordered by lake Ontario to the north. The county is home to 40,343 people, as noted by the 2020 United States Census. According to the data collected from Realtor.com, the county has seen a -.375% change in median days on the market compared to the same time last year.

4. Livingston County – 20 days

Located in the region of the Finger Lakes, Livingston is home to Geneseo. Agriculture has always been a key industry in Livingston county, which according to the 2020 United States Census, contains 61,834 residents. Compared to the year prior, the median days on the market had a 0.2121% change, as noted by Realtor.com.

3. Wayne County – 18 days

On the southern shore of Lake Ontario, between Rochester and Syracuse, lies Wayne county. The Erie Canal cuts right through the rural countryside, ripe with orchards and fishing opportunities. As of 2020, the population is 91,283, according to the United States Census. According to Realtor.com, compared to a year before, the median days on the market had seen a 0.1864% change.

2. Genesee County – 12 days

Smack in the middle of Buffalo and Rochester is Genesee county. The city of Batavia serves as a hub for the county, with many roads convening in the town. Genesee is home to Six Flags: Darien Lake, as well as the protected area of the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge. As noted by the 2020 United States Census, Genesee has a population of 58,388. When compared to the same month a year before, the median days on the market saw a change of -0.1429% as noted by Realtor.com.

1. Monroe County – 9 days

Comprised of 19 towns, 10 villages and the City of Rochester, Monroe has plenty to offer. Known as the imaging capital of the world, Rochester serves as the counties industrial front. Additionally, the county boasts nine colleges and universities that draw students from afar. According to the 2022 United States Census, the population is estimated to be 752,035.
