Cooperative in Crestwood Hills

Built in 1950 by Jones and fellow architects, Whitney R. Smiththe home was constructed as one of the Mutual Housing Association homes of Crestwood Hills, known for having been the only successful housing cooperative in California.

The unique housing proposal was conceived by four studio musicians returning from WWII. They devised a plan that would pool multiple owners’ resources to develop a community of modern homes like this one.

Few of these classic, mid-century modern homes remain in the area, and a few are still in good shape. But this rare gem has been painstakingly returned to its former glory.

The distinctive, sloping roofline that juts out to create a carport has been preserved and fortified, as have the extensive glass walls that allow residents to feel like they’re living in nature 24/7.

Those floor-to-ceiling walls, glass doors, and clerestory windows also allow the 2,085-square-foot home to feel more expansive.
