Inside designers Emily Adams Bode and Aaron Aujla’s whimsical New York house

“Benjamin Bloomstein, my enterprise associate at Inexperienced River Venture, and I owe what we’re doing to Emily,” Aaron tells me of the beginnings of the design agency that now clothes all of Bode’s shops, exhibits, shows, and occasions. “We met in our 20s when Benjamin and I have been combating our personal artwork practices— portray and sculpting—and that is when Emily got here up with the concept for the Inexperienced River Venture.” The work at Inexperienced River Venture serendipitously and seamlessly leads into Emily’s work at Bode. Each are redolent of a nostalgic previous, feeding into one another’s familial histories with the last word aim to archive, accumulate, and doc their lineage and patchwork it into their current, and even future. “The tip aim is to move this on to our kids,” says Emily of the family-owned enterprise she and her associate are resolutely constructing.

A mixture of influences and references dwell within the Bode-Aujla house. A compact house in New York’s Chinatown, the house shared by Emily, Aaron, and their canine, Monday, homes tales of their mixed and particular person pasts. Seen right here, of their front room, a Forties swimsuit from the Congo hangs above a customized corduroy couch lined in private drawings and a dialogue from a Satyajit Ray movie.

The house they share in New York’s Chinatown with their canine Monday enlists what they name “biographical design”, the place (nearly) all the pieces is handmade— together with a refashioned pair of curtains from Emily’s grandmother’s lace assortment. “My mom and aunts took me antiquing from a younger age, bestowing upon me their love of historical past and household traditions,” says Emily who retains a tight-knit community of vintage sellers and personal estates for locating eccentric bric-a-brac and one -of-a-kind gems.
