What is Disability? – Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at 3:00 pm – Presented by Krystina Johnson, independent living and employment specialist, and Eric Evans, youth services and employment specialist, for the Center for Independent Living of Monroe. Since 1976, the CIL has worked hand-in-hand with individuals with disabilities to create and advocate for a more inclusive community for all. In addition to providing individualized services, community advocacy, and group workshops for self-improvement, CIL is a dynamic community enrichment and recreation center filled with events and activities to help people of all abilities connect. CREEDs Honest Conversation: Why Does Zip Code Matter? – Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at 5:30 pm – Presented by Dr. April Demers PhD, MMSSL, CHES. Dr. Demers serves as a visiting assistant professor within the School of Population Health at the University of Toledo. Before joining UT, Dr. Demers served for over twenty years leading a variety of nonprofit organizations and community-based health initiatives at reducing health disparities. Most recently, she served as a director with ProMedica’s National Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Institute. Her research and advocacy interests are in addressing social determinants of health to promote health equity and to improve the well-being of entire communities. She received her doctoral degree in health education from UT, a master’s degree in management, strategy, and leadership and a graduate certificate in data analytics from Michigan State University, as well as graduate specializations in biostatistics and epidemiology in public health from Johns Hopkins University. The Importance of Latinx History while Celebrating Latinx Culture – Thursday, October 27, 2022 at 3:30 – 4:30 pm Presented by Dr. Montemayor-Vazquez. Dr. Montemayor-Vazquez graduated from Lansing Public Schools, later earning her degree in Spanish and political science from Central Michigan University. She attended graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin, earning a master’s degree in Latin American studies and later earning both her master’s and doctoral degree in cultural anthropology from Michigan State University. Her experience after graduation includes working as a senior research associate at the Michigan Public Health Institute, where she conducted a qualitative assessment of Michigan’s expanded Medicaid and the Healthy Michigan Plan in urban centers across the state. Dr. Montemayor-Vazquez also served as an executive board member with the Lansing Latino Health Alliance, advocating for equitable health care access for Latinos in Ingham County.
